The Student Employee Leadership Foundation (SELF)
A program designed to develop the leadership skills of all of the student employees within University Unions & Student Activities, which can be used while a student employee and beyond graduation.  Monthly workshops on key leadership topics, a summer leadership learning retreat and a mid-year leadership development retreat are included in this program.  The SELF program is open to all student employees working within University Unions or Student Activities. Mission Statement: To create an environment that fosters quality student employee leadership learning through focused programs, intentional development, and advancement opportunities. Core Values: provide annual leadership programs based on theories that directly impact leadership skills; identify opportunities for intentional development; promote advancement for non-student leaders; provide programs for giving student employee supervisors tools to be effective educators

UUSA offers a variety of student employment opportunities to compliment academic pursuits, provide resume-building experience, and provide income.  UUSA is committed to the development and advancement of student employees through leadership and career skills training. Venture Out Trip Leader Training        
Through Virginia Tech’s outdoor adventure program, student trip leader positions teach students outdoor leadership, adventure skills, and group dynamics through training like LNT, wilderness first aid, swift water rescue, etc.

Recreation Services Internship (Breakzone and Venture Out)
Interns serve as an extension of the recreation services management team.  The overall mission of the intern role is to complement management, leadership, services, and programs needed in two diverse indoor and outdoor recreation areas. Interns are encouraged to take initiative and take an interest in stretching their opportunity and ability to the limit. A special project are identified early on in the program with goals and strategies associated throughout the internship. Much of the interns’ responsibility are project and leadership driven.
