Leadership Tech (LT) Certificate Program
This co-curricular program fosters student leadership development through experiential learning and student involvement. Each fall and spring semester the program convenes to allow students to engage in an extended learning experience through small peer and large group workshops and activities.
Emerging Leaders
First-year students work with upper class student leaders serving as group facilitators. Content includes learning about self and the foundations of leadership. Students participate in small group activities that connect to a common book, seminars, and shared service-learning goals.Engaging Leaders
Upper class students with sophomore or greater standing join one of several small groups each based around a theme. These students work closely with graduate student-leaders and VT faculty serving as group facilitators. Students participate in group activities that connect to topic areas as well as larger group seminars and activities. Each group works as a team to createservice-learning goals resulting in a community service project completed in the spring. General content includes exploration of personal values, a deeper understanding of leadership theory and foundations, and a focused exploration of several topic areas.
Blue Ridge Summit
The Blue Ridge Summit is an annual regional leadershipconference hosted between Virginia Tech, Radford University, and Roanoke College. Held each fall semester the half-day conference is designed to provide students an opportunity to (1) interact with other students also interested in leadership they otherwise might not meet, and (2) develop their leadership skills either through attendance or by presenting a program. The conference is open to all students, undergraduate and graduate, as well as student organization advisors. Students are encouraged to submit presentation proposals.
Leadership Seminar Series
The Leadership Seminar Series is a way for students to develop leadership skills without having to commit to a yearlong program. Each year the series consists of ten to twelve hour-long workshops addressing various aspects of leadership: from what is leadership, to how do I get involved in my community, to ethics and leadership, to a global aspect of leadership. This program is open to all students, undergraduate and graduate. Students who attend at least seven of these sessions will earn the Leadership Seminar Series certificate.

The Residential Leadership Community (RLC)
The RLC is a theme housing leadership program in which students study leadership while living in a cohort environment. The RLC strives to incorporate the best practices from both philosophies of academia and student activities. The RLC teaches comprehensive historical and social leadership theories and strives to develop communication, time-management, organizational skills, and group skills specific to individual students’ majors and career goalsthrough academic and experiential learning. The RLC is founded on a strong sense of purpose to build leaders that are socially responsible, educated in theory, demonstrate leadership accountability, and who grasp a deep understanding of effective leadership behaviors. The mission of the Residential Leadership Community at Virginia Tech is to enhance students' leadership and interpersonal skills, enabling them to become more effective leaders in any organizational structure. The RLC is a collaborative program provided by the Agricultural and Extension Education Department and The Division of Student Affairs.
Student Leadership Employment Program (SLEP)
Targeted at officers of Virginia Tech student organizations that comprise the Commission on Student Affairs, this leadership opportunity involves student leaders in a variety of meetings and activities held on campus and in the Blacksburg area. The students help to provide developmental support to ongoing programs while interacting with peers and university leaders. Student leaders engage in case studies, project implementation and serve as avoice for the student body when faculty and staff need representation from students during summer sessions.
National Issues Forum
The intention of this program is to engage the Virginia Tech community in a process of deliberation, learning, and leadership around important public issues. The experience of this process is the pedagogy for teaching deliberation around public issues. The annual program is open to students, faculty, staff and VT community members.
Who's Who Among Students
Who's Who Among Students exists as one of a long-standing honors program. For students – the outstanding campus leaders of the year – national recognition by the “Who's Who” program marks a pinnacle of scholastic achievement. Selections to “Who's WhoAmong Students” is made each fall by a selection committee convened by The Department of Student Activities. The campus nominating committee, created to nominate the upper-classmen and graduate students eligible for the program, is composed of a variety of representatives from Virginia Tech which can include faculty, administration and members of the student body.
University Student Leadership Awards (USLAs)
Each year, the Department of Student Activities coordinates the recognition of achievements made by our university’s students, student organizations, and advisors. Students, faculty and staff nominate candidates to receive these prestigious awards. The selection committee evaluates nominees for contributions to the University in areas related to leadership, service and involvement.
Virginia Tech Undergraduate Man and Woman of the Year
The recipients and finalists of the Virginia Tech Undergraduate Man and Woman of the Year Award exemplify the qualities and values important to a Virginia Tech education and captured in our motto, Ut Prosim, That I May Serve. The award recognizes balanced achievement in scholarship, leadership, and service. The Undergraduate Man and Woman of the Year Award are presented to the recipients by Virginia Tech’s President at the Founder’s Day Student Recognition Banquet held each April.
Student Budget Board
University Chartered Student Organizations (UCSO’s) Budget Board
The Student Budget Board is a standing subcommittee of the Commission on Student Affairs. The role of the Board is to recommend allocation of student activity fees to officially recognized University Chartered Student Organizations (UCSO’s) for their programs and activities. The Board is guided by a formal constitution and administers the allocation process under established funding policies and procedures.Registered Student Organization (RSO) Budget Board
The membership of the RSO Budget Board consists of six graduate and six undergraduate students appointed by the Student Government Association and Graduate Student Assembly Presidents. The RSO Budget Board is administratively chaired by the assistant director for student organizations and co-chaired by a student voted upon by the board. It is the chair’s responsibility to ensure fair and equitable distribution of funds, based on the governing policies and procedures of the board. The board is responsible for establishing the annual “Funding Strategy”. As standing subcommittee reporting to the Commission on Student Affairs, the commission ultimately approves the fundingstrategy.
