Community is International: Virginia Tech Dedicates Principles of Community Translation Display September 10

BLACKSBURG, Va., September 4, 2008 – The Virginia Tech community is invited to the dedication ceremony for the Virginia Tech Principles of Community display on the third floor of Squires Student Center on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 from 4 to 6 p.m.  In an effort to make the Virginia Tech Principles of Community universal and available, community members worked to see the Principles translated into 13 languages, framed, and displayed.  The dedication ceremony acknowledges the installation of this display.  The welcoming remarks will be delivered by Kevin McDonald, Vice President, Office for Equity and Inclusion, beginning at 4:15 p.m.  Thirteen volunteers from the campus community will read portions of the Principles in each of the 13 languages to dedicate the Principles as a wonderful addition to Squires Student Center. Light refreshments will follow.

The dedication ceremony for the Virginia Tech Principles of Community display on the third floor of Squires Student Center is proudly organized, supported and sponsored by University Unions & Student Activities (a unit within the Division of Student Affairs), the Office for Equity and Inclusion, Cranwell International Center, Council of International Student Organizations, VT UG Board of Governors Representative, Hillel, Student Government Association, and Miller Off Main Gallery.

The Principles of Community were signed on March 14, 2005. During the summer of 2005, Virginia Tech embarked on a promotional campaign to make the campus as well as the local community aware of the Principles and the university’s commitment to them.
While displaying the Principles on campus, a request was made for translated versions, which were completed in September 2005. To ensure the broadest representation of languages throughout the world, 13 languages were selected for translation. These include languages spoken in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

The translated versions of the Principles are available through the Online Resource Center for the Principles of Community. Many groups on campus use the translated versions. For example, Cranwell International Center provides the Principles, in the student’s native language, in packets mailed to new students.
