UUSA Job Shadowing Program

General Guidelines

Purpose: To develop a job shadowing program for UUSA employees so that they may gain an understanding of the various areas in our department and how they function as a cohesive unit. Those who participate will learn about staff roles in different areas in UUSA and will be able to share ideas among functional units. This will be of particular advantage to those who wish to do the following:

  • Broaden knowledge and understanding of UUSA as a whole
  • Experience the culture of another functional area
  • Observe examples of good practice within another area
  • Understand more about the current issues facing UUSA
  • Understand some of the issues specific to UUSA areas and help identify solutions if needed
  • Identify opportunities for personal and professional development
  • Network with other UUSA staff

Time involvement: a four hour minimum time commitment is encouraged for those shadowing a functional area. To gain a more thorough understanding of some areas, more shadowing could be done in two hour increments thereafter. No more than twelve hours should be required to shadow an area. A preliminary meeting should take place between the area manager being shadowed and those interested in participating to discuss objectives and time involvement.

Job shadowing will be done on a voluntary basis or through direction of one’s supervisor if cross-training or professional development is needed.

Flex Time: Flex time or compensatory overtime should be offered by supervisors to non-exempt employees who take advantage of this program if the hours spent shadowing a functional area take them over 40 hours in a work week.

Area-specific guidelines: Will be determined by area managers. These include, but are not limited to: time required to participate; number of volunteers that can participate at any given time; appropriate attire; and opportunities available through participation.
