As you work toward your degree you will be asked to comply with various US regulations. This chapter presents a brief introduction primarily as they apply to students in F-1 and J-1 status. But it cannot replace the advice and assistance from your Foreign Student Advisor. International undergraduates at Virginia Tech should report to the Cranwell International Center for immigration advising and international graduate students should report to Graduate Student Services, Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown, 111/112 for immigration advising. Many students, professors, and community members will offer you information. However, before making a decision to change your course of study, transfer to another institution, travel outside the United States, or accept employment, you should seek the advice of your Foreign Student Advisor. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAINTAIN HIS/HER LEGAL STATUS.
Students classified in F-1 status are governed by regulations of the USCIS, a branch of the US Department of Justice. Students in J-1 status are governed directly by the regulations of the United States Information Agency (USIA) and by general immigration regulations affecting nonimmigrants. As an international student, you need to remember the following information. For additional clarification of the terms, see your Foreign Student Advisor.

The Office of Graduate Student Services provides immigration services for graduate students.
Employees:
